What this is
A pool gives you June through August. A fireplace or fire pit gives you April and October too — and the evenings in between, when the water's too cool but the deck is exactly right.
A fire pit is the sociable option: a low ring of stone with a burner or a wood bowl, and a sitting wall or chairs around it. A fireplace is the architectural one: a full masonry chimney that anchors one end of the patio, blocks the wind and the neighbors, and throws heat in one direction. Both are built in block and faced in the same stone as your walls and coping.
Gas lights with a switch and needs a line run while the patio is open. Wood is cheaper to build and smells like camping. We'll help you pick; most people know within a minute.
What we build
Round or square, gas or wood, at sitting height with a stone cap wide enough for a drink.
Full masonry with firebox, chimney and hearth — the focal point of the patio.
Stone-capped seat walls around the fire so nobody's dragging chairs.
Bluestone hearths and patio extensions so the fire has a room of its own.

Finishes
Veneer, cap and hearth stone are chosen with your coping and deck samples so it all belongs together.
How it goes
We look at wind, sightlines from the house and pool, and where a gas line could run, then write an itemized estimate.
A proper footing, and the gas line trenched while the patio is open.
Block structure, firebox and chimney built; firebrick lining for wood.
Stone or brick set by hand; bluestone caps, seats and hearth fitted.
Burner connected by a licensed trade, first fire with you, and a site left clean.
Questions
Gas is instant, clean and permitted almost everywhere; wood is cheaper to build and gives you the real thing. We build both and will tell you which fits your patio and township.
Close — a fire pit at the edge of the deck with the pool behind it is one of the best-looking layouts there is. Clearances to the house and fences are what the township cares about.
Rules vary by township, and gas work always needs one. We check before we build.
Usually, with a footing cut in. If we're rebuilding the patio anyway, planning them together is easier and less expensive.
Yes — and it's some of the work we're proudest of. Low-voltage path, step, wall and pool-deck lighting, planned with the patio and wired while it's open, so the yard is as good at nine at night as it is at noon.
Where we do this
Montgomery and Chester counties are home turf, and we travel across Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware for the right project.
