Old paint off. New plaster on.

A painted or failing pool surface has to come off before anything new will stick to it. Hydroblasting strips it with pressure alone — no sand, no dust, no grit left in your yard.

What this is

You can't plaster over a problem. You strip it.

A lot of older pools around here were painted at some point — sometimes several times. Paint is a short-term fix: it chalks, peels, and it will not hold new plaster. Neither will old plaster that's delaminating from the shell. Put a new finish over either one and it fails from underneath within a season or two.

Hydroblasting uses very high-pressure water to cut those layers off down to sound concrete. Compared with sandblasting it's quieter, there's no abrasive to clean out of your lawn and filter afterward, and it doesn't leave a film of dust over the neighborhood.

For most replasters on a painted pool it's simply required prep — we itemize it separately on the estimate so you can see exactly what it costs and why it's there.

When it's needed

How your pool asks for this.

A painted pool

Any pool that's been painted needs the paint stripped before it can be plastered.

Peeling & chalking

Surface coming off in sheets, or a chalky residue on your hands and feet.

Hollow plaster

Plaster that sounds hollow when tapped has separated from the shell underneath.

Layers on layers

Several old coats of paint or plaster patches that no longer hold each other.

Proof

Stripped to the shell, then rebuilt.

What it handles

What comes off, and what stays.

Pressure is tuned to the job — enough to strip a coating, not enough to damage sound concrete or gunite.

How it goes

A day or two, before the real work.

1
Assess & quote

We check what's on the shell and whether it needs to come off — and price it as its own line.

2
Drain & protect

The pool comes down and the deck, fixtures and plantings nearby are covered.

3
Blast

High-pressure water strips paint, chalk and loose plaster down to sound concrete.

4
Clean out

Debris is collected and hauled — nothing abrasive left in the pool or the yard.

5
Next trade in

The shell is ready for acid wash, bond coat and new plaster, usually within days.

Questions

Asked at almost every estimate.

Why not just paint the pool again?

You can, and you'll be doing it again in a couple of years. Stripping and plastering costs more once and then lasts a decade or more.

Is hydroblasting loud or messy?

It's a pressure washer's louder cousin, for a day or two. There's no sand or grit, which is the main reason we use it instead of sandblasting.

Will it damage the pool?

No. It removes coatings and loose material; sound gunite or concrete isn't affected.

Do I always need it before replastering?

Only if there's paint or failed plaster on the shell. If the old finish is sound, standard prep is enough — and we'll tell you which one you have.

Where we do this
